From Beth:

I buy greeting cards like I am single handedly responsible for the survival of the industry. I write them, address them, and stamp them. Sadly, I never seem to mail them. Birthday cards, thank you notes, Christmas photo cards-lovingly glittered and designed, I find them all, stacked in boxes, tucked in old mail, and my favorite-in the car, tucked next to the driver’s console.

People judge you by your actions, not your intentions. My intentions are always good, over the top even, while my actions fall short of the success I plan for. Thankfully, my personal bar is set so high that I can generally take on too much, promise the world, and when I deliver, deliver to the delight of others, while disappointing myself.

Unfortunately, the promises that I make to myself are the ones that are first to get broken.

Working out, eating well, taking care of yourself. Intentions don’t build muscle, they don’t make the number on the scale go down, and they don’t quiet your mind. “Building a better you”. There is a reason this is a multimillion dollar industry. Intention doesn’t get you to the workout, it doesn’t push you through those last 20 seconds of plank, and it won’t help you choose the fruit over the brownie at dessert. Action, not intention, drives results. The ACT of making working out a priority. The ACT of holding your form and toughing it out. The ACT of reaching for the healthy fruit.

A large part of my success with my first round off Body Back has been due to the simple switch in mindset. I didn’t come in with the intention of losing 20 pounds. I didn’t come in with the intention of being the best in the group. I simply came in knowing that my success was going to be built on my willingness to act. I showed up. I changed my diet. I put in as much as I could, each and every time. Excuses were only going to allow me to finish in a sub par fashion-others would see success, but I would know I wasn’t satisfied. I just wasn’t willing to let that happen again, in yet another area of my life.

And it hasn’t. I acted. I still don’t seem to remember to mail cards, I’m still missing deadlines, but in this one area of my life-I have showed up, acted instead of just intended and, what do you know? It worked. Now I just need to nudge this mindset into the other areas of my life. Thankfully, I now know how to do it.
