We are so excited to feature our favorite fit sisters, Betsy and Christy! Not only do they inspire us with their dedication, they share a love of FIT4MOM and even got their own mother to join the fun!
Don't miss the fun photo slideshow at the end of this post!
Where are you originally from?
We were born on the central California coast, and moved to Washington in elementary school. We grew up in on the Sammamish Plateau and both graduated from Eastlake High School and UW. We are 2.5 years apart, and Betsy is the OLDER sister.
When did you join FIT4MOM?
Betsy: I joined in the fall of 2014 when the twins were 6 weeks old.
Christy: I was a member of FIT4MOM when my oldest son was little from 2007-2011, and was SO excited to return in summer 2015 when my daughter was born.
What classes do you attend?
Betsy: Stroller Strides and Body Back
Christy: Stroller Strides
Who is your workout buddy and their age?
Betsy: Twins Christopher and Leigh (Age 2.5)
Christy: Asher (Age 9), Amelia (Age 21 Months) and Julian (Born 11/8/16)
And of course GIGI! Our mom who joined us at Stroller Strides for the greater part of 2015.
What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?
Our favorite thing about FIT4MOM is the incredible group of women that meet up each day to support and encourage one another. And of course, being able to get a workout in that INCLUDES our kids! We get the added blessing of seeing each other and our nieces/nephews throughout the week. It’s been so special to share this time together with our young kiddos. With the busyness of work and school activities it would be hard to see each other so frequently if not for our Stroller Strides mornings!
How has FIT4MOM changed your lifestyle choices?
We’ve always been active, but FIT4MOM has given us the tools and opportunities to incorporate fitness and heath into the daily lives of our whole family. All the kids love to “play” Stroller Strides!
What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?
Betsy: I run a Leadership and Development program at Amazon.
Christy: I currently stay at home full time with my three kids, and LOVE it. I also have a passion for photography and have run a small photography business taking newborn and family photos for the past five years. Prior to staying home I worked as a product development manager and royalty accountant for the consumer products group at 343 Industries (a division of Microsoft).
Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village?
Both of us have deep appreciation for the concept of “it takes a village”. Betsy as she was welcomed into motherhood with not one baby but TWO, and the incredible amount of work that entails. And Christy who became a single mom during Asher’s babyhood and now “enjoys” the trials of having two babies 18 months apart. When you are in the trenches of motherhood, there is no greater gift than the love and support of other moms. Even just showing up at a FIT4MOM class or playdate is a victory, and we all get that. Seeing other moms deal with the same struggles you or your child face is invaluable. There is some kind of unspoken bond when you pull into the parking garage and see another mom hauling her giant stroller out of the trunk with her mat and bands and snack bag… she is our people. A village will look different for each mom, and we are both so thankful to call FIT4MOM ours.
What is your favorite beverage?
Betsy: Coffee, diet coke and thanks to Body Back….Water!
Christy: Diet Coke and Starbucks Hot Chocolate
What is your favorite dessert?
Betsy: Ice Cream
Christy: Chocolate Chip Cookies
You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do?
Christy: Lay in the sun somewhere warm and sleep
What is your ultimate child-free vacation destination?
Betsy: Africa and Antarctica are on still on my list – though I think it would be fun to take the kids to both once they are a little older!
Christy: I love adventure; a few years ago I got to spend 12 days hiking the Coast to Coast with my mom and aunt. (we walked 190 miles from one coast of England to the other!) I would love to do a similar trek to Machu Picchu, or tour Europe with my husband. (And I think I will definitely tag along with Betsy on her Africa trip!)
How has becoming a mother changed you?
Betsy: What Christy says so eloquently below…. and I miss sleep!
Christy: Becoming a mother changed me in so many ways. When Asher was born I suddenly felt like I was waking up to the role I was meant to fill. It has humbled me, brought me into the greatest period of self-sacrifice I will likely ever face in life, and taught me so much about joy and love. It has forced me to slow down and be patient… in all things. And continues to change and refine me as a woman even nearly 10 years in.
I am happiest when...
We are happiest on our annual family house-boating trip to Lake Roosevelt in Eastern Washington! And most of all, when we see our children happy, healthy and fulfilled.
