New Year, New You! Tips for Sticking to Your Resolutions

As the new year gets under way, many of us contemplate resolutions, goals and self-improvement opportunities. For many, these goals center on weight loss and healthy eating. After weeks (or months!) of making less than stellar food choices, it is refreshing to strive for a better overall dietary intake and a more active lifestyle.

All too often, the weight loss goal is front and center, while there is a limited action plan in place to achieve this objective. Without a strategy behind the intention, resolutions typically lose their luster.

When establishing your goals for this year, lay out strategic guidelines to make them a reality. Although lofty goals are typically most desirable, they can be challenging to accomplish without breaking them into smaller targets.

Successful goals are often SMART goals: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timeable/trackable.

Be specific. It is all in the details. What do you really want? Be very precise. The more detailed you are, the easier it is to plan your intentional actions.

Ensure your goal(s) are measurable. Make sure they are quantifiable. Ensure you are able to gauge your progress from start to finish.

Is your goal attainable? Challenge yourself, but ensure you have a solid plan to obtain the end result. What type of lifestyle changes will you have to make?

Keep it realistic. Think about and plan for roadblocks. Brainstorm potential challenges and how will you overcome the obstacles that could set you back.

Make sure you have a timeline established. Save the date! Give yourself a realistic timeframe. Stick to it and ensure you re-evaluate at your stated deadline.
