Fit Foodie Friday: Turkey Taco Meat

Hola mamas! In the Baer Den, we are big fans of “Taco Tuesday!” Every Tuesday I create some type of Mexican fiesta for our taste buds. The recipe I’m sharing today is my tried and true basic taco filling made with ground turkey. I’ve been tinkering with this recipe for years—tweaking, adding, playing with different spices, and I think I’ve finally found the perfect combo! Now, don’t panic if you don’t have or use some of the items in this recipe. It can definitely be tailored for your family’s tastebuds!

This turkey filling is so versatile—-tacos, quesadillas, Mexican pizza, etc. I made turkey and refried bean burritos on Monday, then used the leftover beans and meat to make taco salads and burrito bowls the rest of the week for my lunches. I added a picture of my taco salad (baby spinach, tomatoes, salsa, plain Greek yogurt, sprinkle of shredded cheddar and a multigrain chip for garnish).


  • 1 pound of ground turkey (or ground chicken)
  • Small onion, diced
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 c chicken stock (or chicken broth)
  • 1.5 T cumin
  • 1 T chili powder
  • 1 t each of oregano, garlic powder and onion powder
  • 1/4 t paprika
  • 4 oz can diced green chilis (I love TJs!)


Brown turkey and salt/pepper to taste in large pan, drain fat. Add onion and garlic and cook for a few minutes until onion is translucent. Add all spices and cook for a minute. Add green chilis and chicken stock. Stir every few minutes until stock is almost completely evaporated.
