Mom of the Month prenatal fitness

Mom of the Month: Leah Schilling

Leah is a CA transplant who wasted no time jumping into FIT4MOM. In a short time she has already participated in Stroller Strides, Body Back, AND Fit4Baby. We love her commitment to staying active and creating her village!

Where are you originally from?

I'm originally from the Los Angeles area and have lived in Washington for about a year and a half now.

When did you join FIT4MOM?

In the fall of 2016 when my son was about 9 months old I tried Stroller Strides for the first time!

What classes do you attend?

I did Body Back last spring and now I am doing Fit4Baby during my current pregnancy. I can't wait to do Body Back again after this baby arrives!

Who is/are your workout buddy(ies) and their age(s)?

My son Jem just turned 2 and I am currently pregnant with a girl (who is due any day now!)

What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?

I love how positive and welcoming the instructors and other moms are. Before doing FIT4MOM, I could never imagine doing a workout class like Body Back because I was too intimidated. My instructor Katie was so positive and friendly along with the other moms that it made the class the highlight of my week!

What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?

Before staying home with Jem, I was a high school English teacher. Now I read a lot of board books to a toddler - it's kind of the same thing :)

Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village?

My husband sometimes teases me when I refer to someone as a "mom friend" but I always say it as a positive thing! Mom friends who make up your village are the people who truly understand how challenging and amazing it is to be a mom. They are a fantastic resource from everything to diaper brands, local parks and classes, to understanding that you can both love and really hate Daniel Tiger. The moms who make up your village understand how life changing it is to be a mom and that is a support system that is so important.

What is your favorite beverage?

Caramel macchiato from Mercurys Coffee!

What is your favorite dessert?

Apple pie (especially if my husband made it)

You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do?

Manicure, pedicure, and massage! Followed by a nice dinner out with my husband.

What is your ultimate child-free vacation destination?

Anywhere with a pool or a beach where I can sit in the sun, nap, read and drink something fun.

How has becoming a mother changed you?

I never appreciated how amazing it is to go to Target alone until I had a kid. And I didn't know that a person who barely talks can make you laugh, smile, and feel so irritated - sometimes at the same time. I also didn't realize how selfless I am capable of being than when I share my food with my toddler because I'm so happy he is eating at all. Mostly being a mom has changed me because it showed me that sometimes the hardest things that demand the most from us can also make us the most joyful and contented in the long run.

I am happiest when...

My husband and I are sitting on the couch with Jem, reading one (or all) of his favorite books.
