MOM Kara D.png

Mom of the Month: Kara Durbin

Where are you originally from?

Anacortes - I’ve moved around, but only in the PNW.

When did you join FIT4MOM?

January 2016 for Stroller Strides, and January 2018 for Body Back. I first fell in love with FIT4MOM while living in Olympia in 2011 after the birth of my first child, then again in 2016 here on the Eastside after the birth of my twins.

What classes do you attend?

Body Back M/W 5:30am session, and Saturday Bothell Boost classes, with the very occasional Stroller Strides thrown in!

Who is/are your workout buddy(ies) and their age(s)?

Connor (he does planks with me) - 7

Megan &Evan (“mommy go run?”) - 2

What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?

The kindness and grace shown by other moms who get it. Showing up and seeing my mama friends has gotten me through sleepless nights of nursing twins, work upheaval, moves, you name it!

What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?

I do state regulatory, legal and policy work for Puget Sound Energy in Bellevue!

Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village?

YES. The village is everything.

What is your favorite beverage?

Not a secret at all — wine! Red wine to be specific.

What is your favorite dessert?

Do I have to pick one? Brownies, cheesecake, and pie. I can do without cake, donuts or breakfast pastries, no problem. But I love the others!

You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do?

I’d go for a swim, take a long hot shower, then go get a massage. After that I’d find a cute outdoor cafe and sip a glass of wine while reading my book in the sunshine! ALONE!

What is your ultimate child-free vacation destination?

Hmmm. I’d love to go to Kauai again with my husband. Haven’t been back since our honeymoon 16 years ago — and we were such babies then!

We are scheming a weekend away for his 40th birthday, in Bellingham (where we met in college) and that will be pretty great, too. :)

How has becoming a mother changed you?

My capacity for love has grown, for sure. I’m more cautious and less spontaneous — 3 little kids takes a lot of planning! And I feel more conflicted than I did in my 20s before kids - torn between my work and being a mom, never feeling like I have enough to give to either job. I’m working on accepting who I am and that I’m good enough. :)

I am happiest when...

I am with my family on Whidbey Island (our family cabin). No to-do lists, no work, just outdoor fun, good food and quality time.
