Mom of the Month: Nikki Benson

Where are you originally from? Wisconsin

When did you join FIT4MOM? April 2021

What classes do you attend? Currently I'm attending the HIIT classes two times a week and Body Ignite when I can. I was attending Stroller Strides each week during my maternity leave (the end of 2021) and I really miss being able to join those and bring Sophie with me!

Who is/are your workout buddy(ies) and their age(s)? I have my sweet Sophie, she's 14 months.

What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM? A community of amazing mamas and the great workouts. I always know I'll get a good workout and be pushing hard alongside other strong and motivated women. I have met some great ladies and have made friendships that I look forward to seeing at the classes I attend. There's also a kind of comfort in knowing that you aren't alone, that we are all going through challenges, and the support that we give one another during those difficult times is very impactful.

What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)? I am an HR Generalist.

Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village? Being that we don't have family in the area, in addition to COVID the last couple of years, it has become most apparent to us that we aren't meant to be raising children in isolation. We take great joy in sharing Sophie with others, the joys she brings to our life, but also, we depend on the support of others when things get tough. It's also important that Sophie has relationships outside of us, different experiences, ideas, personalities. Having a village around to share your worries, ask questions, give recommendations, and exchange items is so important.

What is your favorite beverage? Coffee & Lattes - I love the warmth, the smell, and it is my go to every morning. And a couple times a week in the evening, I enjoy a nice cabernet.

What is your favorite dessert? I really love a dense layered cake - like the ones from Deru. But on a more regular basis, I enjoy a hot chocolate with (too many) marshmallows.

You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do? I'd get in a fast workout (so I feel fresh and energized), go out for brunch or dinner with my husband (depending on the time of day), followed by a mani/pedi or massage.

What is your ultimate child-free vacation destination? Greece, Costa Rica, Japan...any foreign travel!

How has becoming a mother changed you? It has taught me acceptance, patience and flexibility. It wasn't until I became a mom that I became accepting and comfortable in my body. I have learned to give myself grace, to be more patient than I ever thought possible, and to be open to changes in our schedule without notice.

I am happiest when... My family is healthy, the house mostly organized and I'm mostly caught up in my work.
